Why do I feed Fermina

Why do I feed Farmina to my dogs: Here I shall share my personal story as a former registered breeder of Swiss Shepherds and still owner of a pack of 7 Swiss Shepherds and my experience in the feeding of my dogs.

The science is clear. Dogs are carnivores and should be fed predominantly meat. If they are fed a food that is basically just maize, rice or other carbohydrates it will have a negative impact on their health, they might look nice and fat, but it is unhealthy weight. Often digestive problems and very often skin and inflammation problems – this also comes out in the extreme rates of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, one can nearly say the cancer explosion that we have seen. 70 years ago you did not hear of cancer in dogs, today the main cause of death!

For a very long time I fed a raw diet. But I must admit I struggled to always find everything required to feed a balanced diet (a prey model diet). And the meat if you wish to stay affordable, often not good quality meat. And where I thought it would be easier to source my meat when I moved to a rural area, I actually found it more difficult than in the city. 

After 3 episodes of contaminated meat, with the last instance leading to severe gastro-enteritis in 5 of my dogs, including a pregnant female I decided the risk of raw feeding is just too high by far. Wish to make it clear that I still consider raw feeding a good option if you can source quality meat and all that is necessary for a balanced prey model diet. Several of my puppy owners are indeed feeding their dogs a raw diet with my blessing.

I personally moved to Acana, which at that time was the only dog appropriate dry food in South Africa. There is now concerns with Mars (the makers of Royal Canine) taking over Champion pet food, the makers of Acana. And it must be said that already in the formula it can be noted in several products the amount of meat has been reduced. The concern is that over time it will become more and more a product like Royal Canine and no longer really dog appropriate.

When Farmina (produced in Italy) came to South Africa in 2022, several of my breeder friends in Europe and North America, including several vets, very strongly recommended it to me. After considering the ingredients and full nutritional information, the high meat content and high protein, that 90-98% of protein from meat, all human grade ingredients, I changed over to Farmina and noted very positive changes in my dogs. I could indeed reduce the amount of food by about 10% – 15%, I noted firmer stools and actually drinking less water (an indication of better digestion) And the most important, they were ravenous about it, they really enjoyed it. When they had to go into their sit/ stay waiting for their food they were drooling a river. And for my own pocket – it also was substantially cheaper than Acana while having higher meat content!

After using it for about two months and seeing the extremely positive impact I became a distributor. Why? I love dogs, I want them to eat the best possible at as an affordable price as possible. I want to get dogs away from the rubbish they are usually fed (and sold by vets) that lead to illness and health problems. I want dogs to eat healthy dog appropriate food and I shall do what I can to facilitate that.

And yes I have had extremely positive feedback that makes this worthwhile. Dogs that has had severe itching problems/ skin inflammation even with expensive medication and so-called specialist diets without success, was put on the Farmina Ocean and Farmina Lamb with 100% success rates, dogs with stomach and digestion problems also on lots of medications moved to Farmina that has brought great improvement to full success. Picky eaters that did not want to eat now on Farmina and cannot wait for their food. Indeed slow transition to Farmina usually fails as the dogs picks out only the Farmina and leaves the rest. Dogs that could not keep their weight, now are in beautiful condition.
