I would do anything if only my dog/s could live longer

“I would do anything if only my dog/s could live longer”, loving pet parents will often say.

But you can!

Internationally leading independent pet nutritionists are in consensus that the average life expectancy of a dog fed primarily MEAT is 25% (2 – 3 years) longer than a dog fed primarily a commercial dog food containing mostly grain/ maize/ carbohydrates (like Hills, Royal Canine and the cheaper dog foods). This includes specialist pet nutritionists like Dr Karen Becker, Dr Judy Morgan, Dr Louden and Rodney Habib. Numerous articles in this regard in veterinary journals and several books were published including Dr Karin Becker’s bestselling “The Forever Dog” and “The Forever Dog Life”.

The only ones who don’t agree are those in pay (directly or indirectly) of the established pet food industry. I wonder why? Maybe something to do with being bought and paid for… Especially in Europe and North America a massive movement away from the usual commercial dog food to a more dog-appropriate dog food containing mostly meat – whether a balanced raw diet or a dry dog food that is predominantly meat (like Farmina). Of course, South Africa is in pet nutrition and other aspects of veterinary science 30 years behind the times.

Why this difference in life expectancy?

  1. Dogs’ digestive systems naturally digest meat much better than carbohydrates – meat is their natural food.
  2. As per research, carbohydrates are metabolized as sugar and this massively fuels cancer in the body (both in humans and dogs). Cancer is the biggest cause of death in dogs.
  3. Carbohydrates metabolized as sugar are also the cause of diabetes mellitus and obesity in dogs.
  4. Grains cause inflammation in the gut and the body, causing inflammatory bowel disease and often becoming apparent in skin problems and itching. Inflammation is also directly linked to cancer, and heart and cardiovascular problems.
  5. A minimum of 22% protein that is also easily absorbed by the body is required to maintain health. Higher levels of protein are required for growth, to repair illness and injuries, and for dogs to thrive. Most foods do not have the minimum protein required, and protein from sources other than meat is not easily absorbed.

Solution

Move to a dog food diet that is predominantly meat – a balanced raw diet or a dry dog food like FARMINA, imported from Italy and hugely popular in Europe and North America. FARMINA has 64% to 80% meat in their dog food and 90% to 98% of the protein comes from meat and all products contain around 30% protein. The Ancestral Grain range only has 10% oats and 10% spelt (good grains) and the other product ranges are grain-free and all products are GMO-free.
