Our Dogs Are Family

Dogs are family

Differences Between Dogs and Humans

Yes, they are a different species than humans – and therefore some differences in approach and treatment are sometimes required. But they are sentient beings, considered to have an IQ equivalent to a two to three-year-old child. According to scientific studies, they can understand up to 200 – 250 words, they can count. They can talk, not human speech, but they have their own language. If you really start listening, you can recognize how they are communicating (the different sounds they make), and they also communicate with their bodies. They have a very high emotional quotient. They have excellent characters with loads of love and loyalty and strong feelings for their humans. This, for me, makes them people, makes them part of the family. They can never just be a possession, a thing, an accessory, or protection.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

But words are cheap. Everyone will easily say “my dogs are family”, it is actually expected from everyone to say it. But the proof is in the actions. Do you treat your dog(s) like family, like a son/daughter in your home? Do you give them the best care possible? Do you give them love and attention? What do you feed them?

The Importance of Proper Nutrition

Would you raise your child just on predominantly maize meal? Or other carbohydrates. Things that you know will cause them health problems? This includes nearly all the commercial dog food in SA including the so-called “premium food” that the vets push down your throat like Hills & Royal Canine. Then we are not even talking about “foods” like Montego, Jock, Ultra, etc.

The Impact of Low-Quality Food

Scientific studies have shown that bad quality food that is predominantly maize/ grain/ carbohydrates will on average shorten your dog’s lifespan by 25% and has a high possibility of leading to cancer, other auto-immune illnesses, obesity, inflammation, and diabetes. If you consider your dogs family, then you would try to avoid this.

The Difference Between Meat and Meat By-Products

Would you feed your child “meat” that is condemned/not fit for human consumption? That is the difference between meat and meat meal/meat by-products. Meat is what is passed fit for human consumption. Meat meal/meat by-products is that which has not been passed fit for human consumption and includes skin, hair, hooves, floor sweepings, but also condemned meat, rotten meat, animals (including pets) euthanized. Once again, that is what most commercial dog food includes.

Resources and Recommendations

On our website, there are several articles (under blogs) on ingredients and their impact on dogs’ life and health. Or you could follow on Facebook qualified vets like Dr. Karen Becker, who regularly writes on this topic with practical advice, or “Dogs First” (Dr. Conan Brady), author of top-rated pet nutrition books.

Make an Informed Decision

Look at the ingredients in the food you are feeding your fur children! And then make an informed decision.

Recommended Diets

It is strongly recommended to either feed a balanced (prey model) raw diet or a quality dry food that is predominantly meat. If you prefer a predominantly meat dry food, we recommend Farmina, with up to 80% actual meat, all ingredients of quality human grade, and up to 98% of protein from meat. There is a range of products in the Farmina range.
